Feature & Follow Friday: Deciding What Books to Read

Feature & Follow Friday is hosted by Rachel over at Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. This is a chance to get to know fellow book bloggers and have them meet you. Be sure to pop over and meet this week's featured bloggers!

How do you decide what books to read?

If the summary interests me, I'll give it a go. While I'm browsing bookstores, it's usually the cover or title that first grabs me, and if I like the summary too, then it's added to the TBR pile. I also have  a notebook in which I write titles of books that I've seen reviewed on other blogs or on Goodreads that appeal to me. As for deciding what to actually read in a certain moment, it depends on how I'm feeling, what I'm in the mood for. I have shelves upon shelves of books to read, so I usually let my eyes wonder over them and go for what grabs me. At other times I have ARCs or review request titles to read and so if a deadline for their review is approaching I'll choose to read them.

Is there something in particular that helps you decide what books to read?

Have a great weekend and happy reading!

  1. Great answer!! I keep a spreadsheet that helps keep the books I want and need to read in order. I try to keep it organized under genre and priority (Example: ARC).

    1. Such organisation! That's something I need to learn. It's so easy to get behind when I'm not actively prioritizing. Thanks, Renee!

  2. It's usually the cover that grabs my attention in bookstores too. A notebook is a great idea! I have a notebook of the books I read each month & what's being released too. It's super helpful for keeping track :)

Thanks for visiting my blog! I'm following back :)

    1. I'm a bit of a list maker and have piles of notebooks lying around! It helps me to remember what I want to read as there's always so many books being released. Thanks for following, Nicola!

  3. I'm a sucker for a cool book cover too! Unfortunately, being shallow about a book's looks has led me to read some pretty books that turned out to be ugly on the inside! :)

    1. I know that feeling well. Sometimes even the summary sounds awesome but the story itself just doesn't work out that way. It's very disappointing.

  4. Covers and titles are usually what I go on too, although I'm trying not to judge books like that anymore haha! It also helps when I've read something great from the same author as well.

    Have a great weekend :)

    1. I'm with you. The story itself doesn't always match the awesome cover...and think of the great books we miss when they have less than stellar covers! That's why I keep a notebook, I write down the titles of books that I've heard good things about so I know to look for them when I visit bookstores, no matter their covers! ;-) And yes, I always grab new books by certain authors too. Thanks, Dyane.

  5. Covers always get me! I love pretty covers but hate when they don't match the book. New follower via GFC. http://angreads.blogspot.com

    1. Something that does happen unfortunately. It always depresses me because I try to not keep books I didn't enjoy but when they have such amazing covers it's hard! ;-) Thanks for following!

  7. I, like you, love lists and shelves! I keep a spreadsheet handy for all my ARC & purchased books, otherwise I loose track of what I need to be reading!!

    1. I think I need to learn from you and start a spreadsheet. My lists & shelves don't help me to prioritize what must be read and I definitely need that! Thanks for following, Jen.

  8. I have a ton of books to read in my library room too. Shelves and shelves. But I mostly read eBooks now since I like to read in the dark. I haven't read any of my TBR physical books in quite some time!

    1. That's exactly what I'm like! I seem to read in the middle of the night a lot thanks to sleeping issues, and so usually read eBooks. It's been a good few since I've read a physical book...and yet I keep buying them and needing more shelf space. I have to learn to buy more eBooks...but I'm a sucker for pretty covers. ;-)

  9. I'm definitely a mood reader so I just choose a book in a genre that I feel like reading. Goodreads always helps, though! Old follower! :)

    1. Absolutely, that's exactly what it's like for me. If I'm not in the right mood for a certain book it's just a challenge to read and that's not fair on the book. :-)
