Feature & Follow Friday: Unexpected book hate/love

Feature & Follow Friday is hosted by Rachel over at Parajunkee's View and Alison of Alison Can Read. This is a chance to get to know fellow book bloggers and have them meet you. Be sure to pop over and meet this week's featured bloggers!

Have you ever read a book you thought you’d hate but loved? Or vice versa?

I can only think of one that I thought I'd hate but ended up loving. I'm sure there's more, but this is all that's coming to mind at the moment. So when I was 18, in my first year of University, people were going on and on about this book and telling me I had to read it. That book was Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Brace yourselves! I kept refusing because, well, it was a children's book. Yes, I know! I was one of those people. But don't hold it against me! I learned my lesson well. I'm now obsessed with Harry Potter. And read mostly YA. Go figure.

As for those I thought I'd love but ended up hating...there's definitely been a few of them. But I'm still having a hard time thinking of more than one! I know I'm in the minority but I am not a fan of the Divergent series by Veronica Roth. I pushed myself to finish Divergent and only sort of liked it - well, parts of it - and then I recently read Insurgent and hated it. I had high expectations because most reviews I'd seen gushed about it being better than the first, but I did not find that the case. I've given up on finishing the series.

So...still want to follow me? I swear I'm not all bad!

Tell me about what books surprised you, either for good or bad.

  1. Congrats!!! I can tell you about The Vanished Ones (Mila Vasquez #2) by Donato Carrisi I thought that this book is historical, but when I start to read it I learn that it's thriller, good one- shakes my world! :)

  2. I read Harry Potter when I was seven, after a few years of being too cool to read something about a boy with a rubbish name. (I started hipster-ing at a young age!). And I've not tried the Divergent series yet either, partly because I'm too hipster (hahaha no) and partly because I'm a bit wary about all dystopians, especially hyped up ones.
I'll be following you on bloglovin, by the way :)

    1. You didn't like the name Harry Potter? That's too funny! And at only 7! :-D I think I need to learn to be a little warier. Going into hyped up books with high expectations is never the best idea! Maybe hipsters are onto something. ;-) Thanks for following!

  4. I had the same thing with Harry Potter. Everyone else was reading it, but I thought that it sounded stupid. I read it and then fell in love! Old follower!

    1. I'm glad I'm not alone! My friend got me to read it finally by giving me a copy for my birthday - she'll never let me live it down. ;-) Thanks, Lizzie.

  5. I’m not a huge fan of Divergent either. It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who didn’t love it.

  7. I agree with you about Harry Potter! I boycotted the series until at least five of its books were out in stores and ended up loving them all! I still can't believe I actually like Harry Potter; I'm usually not into magical books, but HP changed my mind! New follower! :)

    1. The first 3 books were out by the time everyone I knew got into it. I waited until the 4th was about to be released. I admire your holding out - when the 5th was released I stood in line for hours on the day! ;-) I'm not surprised I ended up loving the series. It's great you did too! There's just something about it, right? Thanks for following!
